Firkin, Wirkin, Jelly: the three words to know

« Firkin » denotes a silhouette that has become a category in its own right: a structured bag with a wide base, short handles, a flap and a decorative padlock. The term spread by word of mouth on social media.

The « Wirkin » is its faux-leather version, popularised by American mass retail — the one that launched the phenomenon.

The « Jelly Firkin » takes the same line in translucent PVC or TPU: glossy, colourful, water-resistant, in an unapologetic Y2K register. This is the version that dominates today, because it does not try to imitate leather — it owns its material.

The problem with ordering outside Switzerland

The big American and Asian platforms show attractive prices, but three charges are added on arrival: Swiss import VAT of 8.1 %, the carrier's customs clearance fee, and sometimes duties depending on the goods.

Add to that the lead times — often two to six weeks from Asia — and a return that is practically impossible: sending a bag to the other side of the world costs more than the bag.

Buying from a seller established in Switzerland removes all three drawbacks at once: domestic delivery, prices in francs inclusive of tax, returns without customs paperwork.

Five things to check before buying

The handles first: they are the failure point on cheap models. They must be reinforced where they join the body of the bag, not simply glued.

Then the material: TPU stays supple and withstands cold, whereas budget PVC stiffens and eventually cracks — a criterion that matters particularly in a Swiss winter.

The structure: a good model stands up empty. If it sags on first use, it will never recover its shape.

What budget to plan for in Switzerland

Internationally the category sits broadly between 40 and 80 euros. In Switzerland you should think in landed price: a model advertised cheaply abroad quickly reaches the price of a locally sold item once customs and handling fees are added.

Below that range you mostly find models whose handles give way within weeks. Above it, you are generally paying for a brand rather than better construction.

A genuine advantage: upkeep

This is the most underrated strength of the jelly material. Where a leather bag fears rain and stains, a jelly bag wipes clean with a damp sponge and survives a downpour, the lakeside or a day at the beach unharmed.

Two precautions all the same: avoid leaving it in full sun behind a windscreen, as excessive heat deforms TPU, and store it unfolded so it keeps its structure.
