Where does the name « Firkin » come from?

« Firkin » is a contraction of fake and Birkin. The name says exactly what the object is: an openly acknowledged take on the codes of the Hermès bag, in a colourful, light and affordable version.

This is an important difference from counterfeiting. A fake sets out to deceive: copied logo, usurped brand, luxury price. The Firkin deceives no one — it borrows only the silhouette, with no branding and no ambiguity about what it is. This « dupe » culture is precisely about playing with luxury codes, not falsifying them.

A trend born in Korea

The phenomenon started in South Korea, where these PVC or TPU bags sell for between 20,000 and 80,000 won, roughly 15 to 55 dollars.

The tipping point came in spring 2026 with TikTok virality: on some platforms, demand jumped more than 1,000 % in a single week. The aesthetic has much to do with it — the Firkin ticks the Y2K box, the transparency box and the saturated-colour box all at once.

The material: PVC or TPU, and why it matters

These bags are made from PVC or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), with transparency in the range of 70 to 80 % depending on the model. TPU is the better of the two: more supple, more resistant to cold, and it yellows more slowly than PVC.

What makes a good Firkin

Despite its soft material, a successful Firkin keeps the structured stance of its model: a rounded flap that folds over, a padlock with its key bell, a turnlock closure.
